Proficient readers read not just to understand and question but also to respond. In fact, response is a major component of most college-level reading assignments: your professors expect you to interact more deeply with texts, to engage with their ideas, to agree with some ideas and disagree with others, to be able to “talk back” by formulating and explaining your own position.

When you respond to a text, you show that you have understood it, but even more importantly, you show that you have connected with it and made it your own.
