Cilia generally have a beating movement. 


The nasal cavity, the superior portion of the pharynx, trachea, bronchi, and large bronchioles are lined by a pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium. Most of the conducting portion of the respiratory tract is also bathed in mucus produced by the respiratory mucosa.

Verified Answer

The cilia beat to move mucus and trapped pathogens and particulate matter to the pharynx. At the pharynx, the foreign material can be coughed out or swallowed to be destroyed by the stomach acids. This prevents pathogens and other particulate matter from reaching the lungs.
