The organisms in which both male and female reproductive organs are present are considered as monecious. The plant species like corns and alders are monoecious. The animal species like slugs and snails, along with the earthworms, are monoecious. 


In animals, the male gametes are called sperms whereas female gametes are called eggs. The sperms and eggs fertilize with each other to form a zygote which further continues to develop into an offspring. Since earthworm is monoecious both sperms and eggs are produced by a single organism. This form of fertilization is called self fertilization. Self fertilization reduces the dependency on other organisms for reproduction and continuation of their species.

Following are the advantages of being monecious:

  • They are capable of reproducing and continuing their species through self fertilization if the potential partners for mating are absent. 
  • The species population in which all the individual organisms are monoecious, has increased chances of reproducing since all the individuals are potential mates.
