Are microvilli multicelled or smaller than a cell?

Microvilli are projections from the plasma membrane off the top of cells that help line villi. They increase the surface area of the plasma membrane, which is useful for cells that need to absorb large quantities of substances. For example, the epithelial cells that line the small intestine have microvilli that help absorb digested nutrients.
