Caffeine and Crullers general manager Jane Sutton has suspected for a long time that one member of her management team, Carlos Hernandez, doesn't respect her. He often disagrees with her in front of others, rolls his eyes in meetings when she says something, or just plain ignores her by addressing other people with his comments in meetings. When Jane talks to Carlos, he often doesn't even look at her. She wonders if it is gender related, because she's seen situations before where male managers don't respect her as a boss because she is female—no matter how competent she is. Jane is agonizing over how to deal with Carlos on this issue. She is thinking about confronting him about his behavior the next time it happens in a meeting. She could also try humor by making a joke now and then about how Carlos won't look her in the eye.

Initial Thoughts

If you were Jane, what would you do about Carlos's behavior?
