PREPARING TO MEET WITH A NEW CLIENT

Assume that you are a practitioner at a junior high school. One of the teachers has referred Paco, a 14-year-old Native-American boy, to you. Although Paco is a good student, he has been quiet and withdrawn recently. His teacher thinks something might be bothering him. Write down your ideas about what Paco's first thoughts may be when he sees you. How do you think Paco might be feeling about meeting with you? What concerns do you have about meeting with Paco?

Answer

Write down your ideas about what Paco's first thoughts may be when he sees you

  • Maybe Paco will think that I am not approachable because of my eye glasses that makes me look like a very serious person
  • I think he will be intimidated with the way I carry myself
  • Maybe he will think that I am thinking that he is crazy or have psychological disorder
  • Maybe he will think that I am not trustworthy

How do you think Paco might be feeling about meeting with you

  • He might feel embarassed because he is a teenager and his peer might taunt him in talking to a practitioner
  • He might be scared that I might scold him if don't talk about his feelings
  • He might be skeptical on whether to tell me his problem or not

What concerns do you have about meeting with Paco?

  • I am concern about the sudden change in Paco's behavior
  • I think that it needs more time for Paco to open up to me about his problems
  • I think I should talk to Paco alone to assessed if the problem he is facing is about family or school. And after that, I will talk to his parents and teachers if his problem concerns them
