Write IUPAC and common names for these ethers.

Explanation

  • The general IUPAC name of ethers is alkoxyalkane, where the alkane with more number of carbon will be added as suffix and less number of carbon atom will be the prefix as "alkoxy" group.
  • The alkane chain containing higher number of carbon atoms is the parent chain. In the given structure, the left side of oxygen atom has a carbon chain with three main chain carbon atoms and a methyl substituent in the second carbon atom. The name of the alkane chain is "2-methyl propyl" group. In the given structure, the right side of oxygen atom has a carbon chain with two main chain carbon atoms. The name of the alkane chain is "ethyl" group.
  • "2-methyl propyl" group is the parent chain with more number of carbon, so it is named as "2-methyl propane" as a suffix in IUPAC name.  "ethyl" group has lower number of carbons so, it is named as prefix. As, oxygen atom is attached to first carbon of ethyl group, so the position of carbon is added to the prefix. The prefix is named as "1-ethoxy" in IUPAC name.
  • The name of the ether is "1-ethoxy-2-methylpropane".

Verified Answer
