Describe the presentation you would expect to see and accompanying
deficits that may be experienced due to the location and type of injury. Relate what you know about the anatomy and physiology of neurons and the nervous system as you consider your responses. Include, as appropriate information regarding:
n Kevin is a 34 year old man. He complains that he has episodes of choking, especially with liquids and advanced solids like meat seem to stick in his throat. His speech is starting to sound hypernasal and effortful. Despite feeling like his voice isn't loud enough, he never seems to have enough breath to speak louder. Additionally, Kevin is experiencing some balance deficits and muscle cramping. Overall, he feels weaker and fatigued.
1. Define Multiple Sclerosis, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Myasthenia Gravis and determine which pathology seems more related to the symptoms discussed above.
2. Explain the physiological mechanism dysfunction that results in each of these neuromuscular degenerative diseases (in other words, what part of the neuron or firing of the neuron is affected).
3. Discuss the normal anatomy and physiological mechanism by which a motor neuron (housed in the cerebral cortex) would fire resulting in the contraction of a muscle.
4. Besides speech pathology, what other medical consults (therapists, physicians, etc) might be appropriate for this patient?
