Here is given information: Pillbugs are commonly found in damp leaf litter,
under rocks, and in basements or crawl spaces under houses. Following an inactive winter, pillbugs mate in the spring. Several weeks later, the eggs hatch and remain for six weeks in a brood pouch on the underside of the female's body. Once they leave the pouch, they eat primarily dead organic matter, including decaying leaves.
You will be testing whether pillbugs are attracted to (move toward and eat), repelled by (move away from), or unresponsive to (don't move away from and do not move toward and eat) the particular substances, which are potential foods. If a pillbug simply rolls into a ball, nothing can be concluded, and you may wish to choose another pillbug or wait a minute or two to check for further response. 1. Choose a. two dry substances, such as flour, cornstarch, coffee creamer, or baking soda. Fine sand will serve as a control for dry substances. Record your "dry" choices as 1, 2, and 3 in the first column of Table 1.2. b. two liquids, such as milk, orange juice, ketchup, applesauce, or carbonated beverage. Water will serve as a control for liquid substances. Record your "wet" choices as 4, 5, and 6 in the first column of Table 1.2.
2. In the second column of Table 1.2, hypothesize how you expect the pillbug to respond to each substance. Use a plus (+) sign if you hypothesize that the pillbug will move toward and eat the substance; a minus (−) sign if you hypothesize that the pillbug will be repelled by the substance; and a zero (0) if you expect the pillbug to show neither behavior.
3. In the third column of Table 1.2, offer a reason for your hypothesis based on your knowledge of pillbugs from the introduction and your examination of the animal.
