A risk assessment of the workplace is due in the next two weeks. Each department needs to undergo a risk assessment and identify individual department hazards to ensure at a later date they are reviewed for making a safer workplace. There are three main areas that will need to be addressed, identifying, controlling and reducing or removing the hazards.
Fundamentally, an individual from each department should be made responsible; however, it is also the responsibility for the entire department to ensure the safety of the workplace. People need to understand the differences between a hazard and a risk. A hazard is something that, by its very nature, is likely to cause an accident or injury. A risk is the likelihood that it will do so. Everyone should be aware of the hazards in their department and of their relative risks.
We need to eliminate the hazards or minimize the risk they present. So, the need to identify hazards, assess their risks and control them. As part of the assessment they will need to study the accident, injury and incident statistics and look for patterns such as:
· What types of accidents, injuries occur most often?
· Where do they occur? When do they occur? Who is involved?
· What type of machinery or equipment is involved?
· Which hazards, if they did result in an accident or injury would be most serious?
· How likely is each hazard to occur?
