Group 17Organizations should not be allowed to mandate that employees adopt a healthy lifestyle outside work.

Introduction

Staying healthy is a crucial topic for any human being and most healthcare facilities; workers constantly preach about the importance of having a healthy lifestyle. As everyone has to keep their health in check themselves, it is not the job of organizations to have a mandate that employees should adopt a healthy lifestyle. In this write up, we would be outlining the reasons supporting the motion as to why organizations should not be allowed to mandate that employees adopt a healthy lifestyle outside work.

Before we move further, we have to consider why this issue is really important for us to discuss. According to the journal, "The Evolution of HR: Developing HR as an Internal Consulting Organization", human resources (HR) as a profession does not have the same "grounding" in legally mandated processes and reporting as does Finance. There continues to be more "art" than "science" and much greater variability in the quality of how the work is defined and delivered. With that being said, it is explained that the HR department (which from the name handles employees in an organization) are in charge of the welfare of everyone in the entire organization so most internal problems in the organization are handled by them. Discussions around a healthy lifestyle is important to employees, but companies that make it mandatory are not taking it too far. It is wrong because most companies do not even have the facilities to make this process a smooth one thereby causing internal conflicts in such organizations.

This issue arose due to the fact that employees started to complain about the fact that companies are starting to invade their privacy and wanting to have an impact in their life outside of work (which should not be). Employees raise the point that when they join an organization, only rules directly involving the organization should be permitted and their personal life should be out of it except the employee is very fine with it but for a company to forcefully want to make a change in an employees lifestyle is not accepted.

There is a controversy in this issue because some people feel that organizations should make it mandatory for employees to have a healthy lifestyle outside work because directly or indirectly, everything an employee does would affect the company in one way or another while some people feel otherwise. Some argue that the company should not be involved in their employees private life given it does not relate to the day-to-day activities of the company.

Discussion

Below are the list of reasons why organizations should not make it mandatory for employees to have a healthy lifestyle outside work which would be explained further:

● ● ●

It does not affect the day to day activities of a company

It is considered as invasion of privacy

A professional should handle issues concerning an employees personal life and not the company

If not handled properly, it can lead to low output from an employee

As we have listed above, how an employee lives their life outside work should not be the concern of the company and according to "Designing Effective HRM Systems: The Issue of HRM Strategy" The three basic HRM strategies outlines by Miles and Snow (1984) were (i) building human resources (ii) acquiring human resources (iii) allocating human resources. With that being said, we can see that even the HR department of an organization is only mandated to work on building, acquiring and allocating human resources and they have little or no business with how their workers live their life outside of work. For example, if an employee eats too much junk food after work but still comes to work the next day and performs his/her tasks efficiently then the organization should not have a problem with that; the worker is still able to efficiently do exactly what they were hired to do.

Deliberation around the invasion of privacy by employers (on employees) in the workplace is also of vital concern. The fact that an organization is interested in what happens outside their jurisdiction is invasion of privacy and many people want to have their privacy. An employee would not be pleased knowing that the organization they work for is concerned about how they are living their life outside of work. It can be compared to a big brother monitoring system that constantly hovers over them. While at work they have eyes on them, as if that were not enough, their activities outside work now also becomes monitored by the organization. Once employees start to feel this way it can lead to them leaving the company and in some cases they can actually sue the organization if they are not feeling too good about the situation.

If a company is really concerned about their employees lifestyle, instead of making it mandatory for them to change it, they should offer advice and refer them to a professional who can handle the matter properly. Even at that, they shouldn't force them to see a professional as it should be their personal decision to take the offer or leave it. Professionals like psychologists and counsellors should be introduced to tackle this problem and of course with permission from their employees. These people's sole aim is for people's personal development so they would certainly handle the case way better than any organization not in their field would.

Finally, if an organization fails to handle the issue of a healthy lifestyle among their employees outside work it can cause a lot of problems within the company both on the short term and long term as well. In some cases some people might not be able to handle both the pressure from

work and also the pressure from changing their life simultaneously and if they are not properly attended to, they can break down and start to give out low output as they are already overwhelmed by pressure from all sides. Also once other employees start to see the effect of the pressure on others it would also get to them. The company may start to have internal issues among its workers and once that happens the company would have issues with thriving.

Apart from these points listed above supporting the motion on how organizations should not be allowed to mandate that employees adopt a healthy lifestyle outside work some people oppose the motion and support the fact that organizations should mandate the employees to adopt a healthy lifestyle outside work and some of their reasons are listed below and would be further explained as well:

● Some employee habits/behaviour can affect performance

● Employees have to represent the organization well outside the institution

● Motivate them to be of good character and get better positions in the organization

● Organizations that have to deal with customer services have to make sure their workers

lifestyle would not affect their relationship with customers

According to "Designing Effective HRM Systems: The Issue of HRM Strategy" there is some evidence that workforce characteristics mediate the relationship between Human Resource Management and organizational effectiveness. In other words, the habits and behaviours of employees also play a vital role in the development and success of an organization. If an employee does not have a healthy lifestyle, and their poor lifestyle has caused them to have some health issues, they need to be on and off work from time to time maybe to rest or go to the hospital. It would be a set back for the organization because they would not be able to function at full capacity if they have one or two of their employees on and off, not only would there be delay in outputs but there would be pressure on other people that are meant to cover up for them which many people in most cases can't work properly under pressure.

Employees even when they step foot out of the company are still a member of the company and anywhere they go, they would still be referenced to the company through them. Basically, every employee in a company is representing the company outside so if they are of good behaviour and have a healthy lifestyle people would look at the company in a good way thereby giving them good reputation compared to having a company that has about two to three drug addicts, people would not want to associate with such an organization because of the type of employees they have.

According to "Problems and Perspectives in Management" it is argued that only those individuals who possess core competencies of the organization are of crucial importance for the organization's competitive position (Lepak and Snell, 1999). Further expanding that statement, the company would only take the people who are ready to obey their rules and follow it seriously. No institution would want to deal with employees that cannot follow their instructions. The company also has an image they must always protect so they have to ensure everyone is in check.

Organizations that deal with people mostly have more work to do when it comes to their employees. According to "Problems and Perspectives in Management" Grant (1991; 1996) states that an organization is a place where knowledge was integrated and used for specific purposes. That being said, employees need to also understand that a company mandating the adoption of a healthy lifestyle is all part of the process is making the company thrive and rise above competitors as they would not talk about it if it would not at one point or another affect them.

Conclusion

In a nutshell, companies should not make it mandatory for their employees to adopt a healthy lifestyle outside work because they are invading their workers' privacy and most people are not comfortable with that. Apart from just complaints about invasion of privacy, when they cross the lines with their employee they can be sued by them. In addition, employees when pressured too much can snap and start to not work as hard as they are meant to and sometimes they tend to become nonchalant about it. A better solution is for the company to hand over the job to a professional or agency that is grounded in this field so that their goal can be carried out without causing any conflict and they should not also force their workers to do anything that does not directly impact the company's output. According to "Strategic HR review" Generation Z is more pragmatic than you might expect. Most employees tend to act ethically and be well composed when they are at work.

Furthermore, we support the motion that Organizations should not be allowed to mandate that employees adopt a healthy lifestyle outside work because it is out of their jurisdiction.
