ENVIRONMENT, BUSINESS AND THE 21ST CENTURY 2 Environment, Business and the 21 st Century In the present century, there has been a growing consciousness which has been more heightened than in the other centuries that the environment should play a fore part business. The effect of the environment on business will come in two different ways. The first one is that they might present some challenges in the business environment, and they might also present opportunities. As such, both businesses and governments will have to come up with solutions to deal with the environmental challenge. Businesses also have to come up with ways in which to tap into the environment as an opportunity for them. An analysis of the future of environment and industry in the twenty-first century reveals that while the environment presents a business challenge, it will also be an opportunity for many companies to reinvent themselves. Challenges the Environment Will Present to Businesses in the Twenty-First Century In the century, one of the most notable things is the growth of knowledge in which unchecked business growth can bring to the natural and human environment. As such, the first challenge is that governments have enacted and will continue to enact laws that seek to protect the environment. According to Rechtschaffen, Gauna, & O'Neill (2009) such laws might lead to higher costs of business for most of the business, and thus reducing profit margins. For instance, laws such as the Clean Air Act and its various amendments requires the Environmental Protection Agency to set air quality standards without any regard as to “costs to business” (Reed, Pagnattaro, Cahoy, Shedd, & Morehead, 2016 p.587). The EPA can do by imposing penalties, both civil and criminal fines. Secondly, the environment will also become a challenge to businesses through the depletion of raw materials, plants, and animals that serve as the central foundation for some of the businesses and the plants.
