Case Mark Jones started at Macro Incorporated over fifteen years ago as an entry-level worker in their Illinois facility. Over the years, he completed a degree program online, and earned a series of promotions to a role in senior management. Mark’s wife, Annie, also worked at Macro, with five years experience in Administrative support. Profits at Macro have dropped over the past few years as a result of a recession and new competitors. The Executive Committee deliberated over options to improve company financials, and finally accepted a buyout offer from a large Holding Company on the East coast. The offer required that Macro reduce headcount and accept new leadership. The Holding Company appointed a new CEO, and the changes began. Since his promotion to senior management, Mark had reported to Macro’s former CEO. Under new leadership, Mark did not know what to expect. When he came to work on Monday, the new CEO requested a private meeting. Mark was understandably nervous, but he cleared his schedule and headed to the CEO’s office. The CEO encouraged Mark to relax, and listen to his reorganization plan for the company. Behind closed doors, the Holding Company decided it was necessary to reduce headcount at Macro’s Midwest facility and relocate senior managers to the East coast. Mark was told he must dismiss his entire department. Mark’s job in Illinois would also be eliminated, but the CEO offered Mark a new position in senior management on the condition he was willing to relocate to the corporate headquarters on the East Coast. Mark and Anne now face a critical personal and professional dilemma. He and Annie are life-long residents of the Midwest. They have family living nearby and enjoy the company of their friends and neighbors. At present, Annie’s job at Macro is unaffected, but together they must decide whether or not to move to the East Coast for Mark’s new job opportunity there. This decision will obviously impact Annie’s career options as well. If they make the move to the East Coast, will Macro offer Annie a position at headquarters? The Joneses have one child in middle school and another child on the way. With the current state of the economy, starting over at this point in their careers would be a challenge in another part of the country without the support of family, friends. Housing sales have slumped, and the Joneses will likely have to sell their Illinois home at a loss as well as move to an unfamiliar new neighborhood. If they decide not to make the move, they wonder if Mark would receive a severance package and for how long? Could Mark find in new job closer to home in the competitive job market? Fortunately, Mark and Anne have three months of income in savings. They created this savings account for just such an emergency. As a last resort, they could also tap into a portion of their retirement savings if absolutely required.
