Discussion Question
DISCUSSION Have you ever encountered someone who you felt was a leader? In casual conversation, you may have stated, ‘Susan is a natural leader’. But what does that really mean? Have you recognised in her certain traits, or have you observed key results from her actions or influence on peers? What measurements are you using to evaluate her leadership ability? Review this week’s media resource entitled The Transition from Management to Leadership and consider whether Dublon’s experience supports either the differences or the similarities between leadership and management. With these thoughts in mind, for this week’s discussion you will assess the meaning of leadership, contrast it to management, and discuss the trait approach. In a 750- to 1,000-word response, post your answers to the following questions: Northouse (2013, p.5) stated, ‘Leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal’. Can this definition also apply to the term management and why? Pick an occasion when you believe that you served as an effective leader within an organisation (whether formally or informally) and describe the traits you exemplified. If the situation or environment had been different (family setting, a crisis, etc.) do you think you would have exemplified these same traits? Remember to cite and reference examples from the readings and journal articles for this week.
