CHAPTER 6 CAREER CORRESPONDENCE AND APPLICATIONS Job Search Necessities Striving for success without hard work is like trying to harvest where you haven’t planted. —DAVID BLY CHAPTER OBJECTIVES After completing this chapter, you will be able to: Understand the proper writing techniques to create successful career correspondence. This chapter discusses preparing cover letters and other necessary job search correspondence and completing a job application. Throughout the chapter, you’ll find tips and techniques to help you prepare career correspondence and job applications thoroughly and accurately. CAREER CORRESPONDENCE When are job search letters necessary? Quite often. First, there are cover letters that accompany your resumes. There are also networking letters, prospecting letters, follow-up letters after the interview, and finally (and happily) the acceptance letter. Let’s begin with one of the most important pieces of correspondence, the cover letter. The Cover Letter A cover letter, or letter of application as it is sometimes called, is the letter that covers your resume, literally. A cover letter introduces you to the potential employer. It makes a first impression and serves to set the tone for your resume. A well-crafted cover letter contains useful information not found in your resume and spotlights important items that are included in the resume. So, it is a fairly important piece of writing.

Characteristics of a good cover letter A good cover letter does the following: Makes a good first impression. Is original and specific to each job application situation. Provides an answer to the question “Why should I hire you?” Is direct and to the point. Is usually one page or less in length. Is written on paper that matches your resume paper (a matching envelope should also be used). Writing the cover letter Remember, a cover letter must be well written. Its purpose is to transmit and present your resume to a recruiter. Because it establishes the very first impression of you, it must put your very best foot forward. Essentially, cover letters can be written in three basic paragraphs: 1. The introductory paragraph, in which you apply for the position, giving its title and how you learned about it. 2. The middle paragraph, which references your resume and sells you by mentioning your key attributes or traits. 3. The closing paragraph, which asks for an interview and indicates the follow-up you will do. These three parts of a successful cover letter are shown in Exhibit 6.1 . A sample cover letter follows in Exhibit 6.2 . EXHIBIT 6.1 Cover letter guidelines.
