CHAPTER 8  BEFORE THE INTERVIEW How Best to Prepare? What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us. OLIVER WENDALL HOLMES CHAPTER OBJECTIVES After completing this chapter, you will be able to: Understand the importance of researching companies and doing company  research. Identify the three basic types of interviews. Understand the six forms of interviews. Appreciate the importance of dressing for interview success and identify  appropriate dress and grooming for formal interviews. In addition to a well-crafted resume, interviewing successfully is crucial to your job search.  The resume lets people know who you are and helps you set up an interview. However, the  interview is the key to unlock the door to the job you want. An interview provides the  opportunity to personally present your qualifications and experience to an interviewer. More  important, though, is the interviewer’s assessment of your personality, interpersonal and  communication skills, and ability to fit into the organization. Therefore, it is critical that you  convince the recruiter not only of your technical ability to do the job, but also of your  personal abilities—you are a good person, you communicate well, and you can fit into and be an asset to the organization. A recruiter is not merely interested in a list of your courses, degrees, previous or current  work experience, or other resume items. A prospective employer wants a qualified employee  who is a team player, can communicate, can take advantage of opportunities, has a high  energy level, keeps an upbeat attitude, and demonstrates high ethical standards. That’s quite a list of desirable traits! Keep in mind, companies want only the best and will do all they can to hire the best candidate. Your challenge is to convince the recruiter that you are the very best  person for the job. The setting for this persuasive discussion is, of course, the interview. The  interview is one of the most important business meetings you will ever have. So, how do you prepare for it? This chapter discusses company research and its benefits, the  types and forms of interviews, an overview of the stages of an interview, and dressing for  interview success.

COMPANY RESEARCH How many job seekers do thorough company research as part of their interviewing  preparation or as part of the preparation for their job search in general? Although it’s hard  to say what percentage of seekers do a good job researching, it is safe to say that very few  engage in this very important activity. Is researching a company really that important? You  bet it is! Job search experts often mention the importance of researching a company before  going to an interview, and they also recommend that the research be done before sending  out resumes and cover letters. Companies should be researched as part of each job search  process. The Benefits of Company Research What are the benefits of researching a company? Many job hunters select potential  employers somewhat haphazardly. They may learn about openings through friends, the  classified sections in newspapers, or on the Internet. These job seekers may do a bit of  research on a company once an interview is secured, but they are missing out on many  benefits by not focusing on a comprehensive plan to research important companies  throughout the job search process. Researching companies helps you select which to  pursue for employment, create good resumes and cover letters, conduct more effective  interviews, and make informed employment decisions. Research companies that you are interested in working for. These are companies that are  prime candidates to receive your cover letters and resumes. Learn as much as you can  about them including such things as reputation, organizational structure and operation,  finances, locations, and personnel. Use this information to determine which is a good  employment match for you and where you would fit in best. After you receive a job offer or even when you are comparing two companies for  possible employment, reflect on what you have learned about these companies through  the interview process and through your personal research. This information is valuable in  helping to determine with whom you will accept employment. As you can see, company  research offers benefits throughout the job search process, but the area that deserves the  most focus here is how it relates to the job interview. Company Research and Interviews How can company research affect the outcome of an interview? Based on what you learn  when you do your research, you will be able to: Respond to certain interview questions in a way that demonstrates the fit between  your background and the company’s needs.
