Determining a Person’s Social Style

MKTG 220 Lesson 10 Assignment Determining a Person’s Social Style (G) Step 1: In this activity you are to visit someone you do not know in his or her office. You may call on a teacher whose classes you never attended (preferably someone in a department other than your major field), on a co-worker in a different department than yours, or someone similarly unknown to you. Your stated purpose is to conduct a short interview (about 5 minutes) for a Personal Selling class about the individual’s photocopy behavior. For the interview purposes, ask several questions such as these: 1. How much photocopying do you do in a typical week? Number of pages? Number of different documents? 2. What types of things do you have photocopied? Correspondence? Manuscripts or reports? Course or meeting materials? Other things? 3. Where and how do you have the different items photocopied? By yourself at the department copier? By others in the department office? By your department’s copy center? By outside copy shops? A combination of these? 4. Additional questions that occur to you in the course of the conversation. Meanwhile, the actual purpose of your visit is to determine the person’s social style: Amiable, Driver, Analytical, or Expressive? NOTE: You are not to ask any direct questions to help you determine the social style (for example, “Do you consider yourself deliberate or spontaneous?” or “Are you dictatorial or permissive in your relationships with others?”). Instead, you must determine his/her social style yourself, based on your observation of how the person behaves in his or her surroundings and what he or she says. Concentrate on the customer’s behavior and disregard how you feel about the behavior. Do not let your feelings about the customer or thoughts about the customer’s motives cloud your judgment. Avoid assuming that specific jobs or functions are associated with a social style. Make sure to look for clues and information that may suggest you have correctly assessed a customer’s social style. To make the exercise more meaningful, take a friend with you on the interview. Tell your friend about the objective of the assignment—to determine the person’s social style. You might need to explain the social styles matrix to your friend before the interview. Your friend should be introduced as such and should do nothing more than observe the interview. You do all the talking. After the interview, individually reach conclusions as to the interviewee’s social style before sharing your views. Then compare your findings with your friend. Are there differences in what the two of you listed as conclusions and the evidence supporting these? How do you account for the differences? 1
