I have always considered myself to be an adventurous and friendly person who can adapt to any mutable situation until I started an internship in 2012 as an auditor in an auditing firm in the USA. The firm was owned by an Indian family and all the employees of the firm were Indian. Coming from a tolerant and open-minded background, I considered the internship to be an exciting experience. But what I didn’t know back then was that my colleagues or even my boss might not be as tolerant and open- minded towards me as I was towards them. It all dawned on me since day one when I realized how differently I was treated. My colleagues were avoiding mingling with me and even the silliest conversation outside the work environment seemed impossible to be initiated. It made me feel abandoned and unwelcome. To be honest, this bitter fact affected me strongly even at home and long after the work hours were over. I would sometimes have sleepless nights and ugly thoughts about my colleagues’ attitudes and behaviors that were always pushing me towards quitting. Despite this fact, I managed to hold myself together and to concentrate on doing the best I could at work to show that I was up to it. As a result, I started improving quickly especially that I was getting extra attention from the CEO who was trying to help me blend in and feel at home. This fact alarmed my colleagues who put me under more challenging conditions. After months of challenge, it had finally occurred to me that I might need to ask the help of a friend of mine who lived in Dubai and whose wife is Indian. Therefore, I talked to the wife who gave me some valuable advice on how to blend in the Indian culture at work. So I started applying the wife’s advice by initiating shopping with my colleagues and buying Indian traditional clothes for example, or by bringing some Indian sweets to the office on Diwali Holiday. I even started learning how to cook butter chicken and black Dall. All this helped create a cohesive atmosphere and eventually made me feel more welcome among my colleagues. 1

Unfortunately, the CEO retired soon after and his daughter took over running the firm. At that point in time, my problem was not with my colleagues anymore who started to like me and accept me. It was rather with the daughter of the CEO who was annoyed by the change that had happened in the office. She was also irritated by the fact that her father appreciated me and that he always gave me credit for the efforts I put at work. He would even tell his daughter to look up to me and to learn from my constructive attitude which transformed the office into a positive working environment. Consequently, after the daughter had taken over the business, she started mistreating me in many various ways such as taking out the clients’ big accounts from my portfolio and limiting my growth and exposure, while giving me many urgent but low important tasks which only add pressure in terms of time management to my daily duties and tasks and make my day-to-day journey at the office uncomfortable. However, I was able to survive under these working conditions for two years due to the good relationship and the trust that I had built with my colleagues. Eventually, due to a loss of one of our agency key customers as he got sever audit points from the IRS and that was due to some internal corruption at his entity, the daughter managed to frame me and accuse me for the loss of that key account, and then fired me in a very humiliating manner. Hence, after enduring two years of hard work, intolerance, and mistreatment, I left the audit firm with a broken heart. But surprisingly, that same client knew about what happened and sent after me. He recommended my name to start handling his account with the new auditing firm he was working with. 2
