temperature the solid decomposes to CaO (solid) and C02 (gas). Calculate the work done due to (a) the
formation of C02 and (b) the formation of CaO. In each case, state whether work is done on the sample
by the surroundings, or by the surroundings on the sample. What fraction of the total work done is due
to the formation of the gas phase (C02)? (Data: The density of CaO is 3.34 g cm‘3 and that of CaC03 is
2.71 g cm‘3 .)
