Asthma is a serious, sometimes deadly, condition that affects many people throughout the
world. There are many new drugs being used to treat asthma, but deaths from asthma are continuing to
grow every year. Magnesium has been used before in the IV form to treat acute asthma, but it was
never widely acknowledged, nor were it's effects on chronic asthma studied. This article was a
summary of a study done on chronic asthma patients.
The study was made up of 43 patients who came to the authors clinic. These patients did have
informed consent and were comprised of both acute and chronic asthma patients. All patients used a
spirometry device before and after the infusion. Half of the participants had their magnesium, with
other nutrients, in an IV push over 10-15 minutes. This was done quickly enough to have some minor
side effects, but not orthostatic hypotension. The other half of the patients received the infusion in 45
minutes, with 250cc of sterile water added. Patients were treated in a wide variety of frequencies, with
the most being twice a week and the least being every other month.
Results were gathered after five months of therapy. These results were measured to patients
baseline results. Patients in the short term therapy who received infusions every other month showed
an improvement of about 34%. Patients in the long term therapy showed huge improvements
averaging 95%. Patients who received the magnesium along with the other nutrients were able to
improve far more and showed no signs of tolerance to the magnesium in comparison to patients who
only received magnesium. However, adding nutrients to the therapy of people with acute asthma
showed the opposite results, so using magnesium by itself in the treatment of emergent asthma is still
considered to be the best choice.
These results are really encouraging to the millions of people who suffer from asthma around
the world. The feeling of not being able to breathe is a scary one and to be able to provide long term
relief from asthma symptoms is a positive step forward for these patients.
