CMPS-297 Assignment #4 due April 22, 2010 The final report is due on the 22 nd – implementation will start on the 20 th . The purpose of this assignment is to establish your familiarity with the basics of design using MSI chips (counters, Multiplexors, etc). The following state diagram describes a simple controller for a printer. The signals shown on the transitions are assumed available (except from the Timeout which you will need to implement). Each is available on a dedicated line. This diagram does not show any outputs (i.e. what the controller is producing as output to actually drive the printer hardware), for this assignment we only care to implement the controller’s transitions based on signals it receives from the computer and the computer’s driver program. This design must be implemented using a counter and multiplexers. You will also need to implement the Timeout signal using either a counter or a shift register. A system clock is assumed available; this will be implemented with the TTL output of the Square Waveform of the wave generator available on the protoboard. The rest of the signals appearing on the state diagram will be manual inputs. Notes: Make sure to do a proper report on the work and in particular of the circuit design. When you get to implement it in the lab you will need clear designs. If you come to the lab without proper schematics you will not be allowed to proceed with implementation and you will not be given additional time to complete it. You should have a cover page identifying the class, the assignment, the date, and your name. You should have a statement of the problem and as many sections as required to display the work, i.e. analysis/synthesis and schematics.
