Observation Log Essay: Revised Instructions (4/11) Part 1 of the “Final Exam” is done outside of class—the Observation Log Essay, for which you’ve been (or should have been) gathering content and resources for over the past few months. Now that you’ve collected information and notes, it’s time to streamline this work into an actual essay. To do that, we need a central line of thought. The best way to do this, I think, is in the form of answering a question. Your answer to this question is the “thesis” (although you don’t necessarily have to be “arguing” anything in this paper) or “main idea” that will glue the entire contents of your essay together. Ideally, this piece is going to be mostly re±ective. Here’s what you looked at, now tell me what it all means. What have you learned? What have you gained? What new insights about this topic does a closer observation of it reveal? How has your interest or attachment to this topic changed over the past few months? (These are sample questions that will hopefully get you thinking in a re±ective, thoughtful manner.) Really, this essay is extremely open-ended. It just has to be: comprehensive, insightful, and make sense. Your essay question is: Use the answer to this question to focus your essay. Weave the notes and observations you’ve made over the semester into this narrative, and tell me what they mean or why they are signi²cant. Think deeply about what you’ve looked at. An essay that’s ²lled with moments of critical thinking, insightful commentary, and thoughtful remarks about the topic will be much stronger (and be scored much higher) than one that is surface-level deep, poorly focused, or lacks any signi²cant impression that time, e³ort, or research went into its making. I would like to be impressed by your thinking. Please try. Note: The word count for this assignment is 1,200 words, single-spaced . That means, 2 full pages in a standard 12-point font. It is due at the start of our Fnal exam period: Section RP: Friday, May 6 th , 9:45-11:45 AM Section SG: Monday, May 2 nd , 2:15-4:15 PM
