Project#1 - Stability, Instability, and Conditional Instability Project #1 – Group 2 Instructions for Conducting Group Work: Click to see how to rename the tab in your worksheet. This project is due at the end of Module 3. where instability numerically occurs. Worksheets 1 - 4). Do this by renaming one of the worksheets with your initials. (Double-click the tab.) In the Environmental Lapse Rate and Parcel Worksheet you've claimed, perform the following calculations and assessments, and record the following results in your tab. A. Beginning at the surface, compute the parcel temperatures and parcel dew point temperatures of each level. Place these values where question marks initially reside. B. Calculate the condensation level (if any). C. Calculate where the parcel temperature exceeds the environmental temperature (if any). D. Note the weather or geographical feature in the area provided in your tab under "Lifting in the environment". Then answer all questions in part D. left hand corner>Download as>Microsoft Excel (.xls).

Project #1 - Stability, Instability, and Conditional Instability TemplateEndEditable TemplateBeginEditable name="content" This project is due at the end of Module 3 . When the production of clouds becomes organized, it results in rapid conversion of water vapor to cloud droplets and precipitation drop sizes. To estimate when these processes may occur and how intense they will be, meteorologists use a technique called the adiabatic process. The process makes a mathematical computation that simulates the lifting of a volume of surface air, called an air parcel , and allows it to cool due to the decrease in pressure on it, or the slow decrease of the weight of air above it. Beginning with the surface temperature and dew point temperature, both values are decreased at prescribed rates, which will cool the parcel as it rises and will eventually permit condensation to begin within the parcel. At every level, the process compares the temperature of the cooling parcel to the actual temperature of the air in the environment, data which are available from a recent measurement made with a radiosonde , an instrument used twice each day to measure temperatures in the troposphere above a location. If the parcel is always cooler than the environment, this means that the parcel is stable and when lifting is terminated, the parcel will sink back down to its original position, just like a rock rolling downhill. If the parcel is ever warmer than the environment, this means that the parcel is unstable and it will continue to rise on its own without the assistance of further lifting. Then, the meteorologist searches the environment to determine if there are weather features present that day or if geographical obstacles exist in the region that can cause the lifting needed to reach the level where instability will occur.
