Question

We are about to have a formal discussion about a particular ruling

that arose out of the attempted Direct TV/ Dish merger. To facilitate this, let's add some history. Answer the following in a paragraph. Who officially was asked to rule on this merger? What is the nature of the "hearing" that actually took place? If they disagreed with the decision that was came out of the "hearing", who could the firms proposing merger have objected to? Why didn't they? What has happened to the market definition and the two firms' market shares since the merger was abandoned? (You may want to skim the sections of the book on US procedures for approving/blocking mergers for some of this detail. You may also want to search the library database for info on these companies post-merger.)
