English 101 — Bartholomaus Essay 3 — Just Mercy Bryan Stevenson’s Just Mercy tackles many important social issues. For this assignment, write a
4-5 page essay that analyzes one of the following questions: 1. According to Stevenson, “The underrepresentation and exclusion of people of color from
juries has seriously undermined the credibility and reliability of the criminal justice
system, and there is an urgent need to end this practice.” Write an essay that explores the
lack of diverse jury pools. How has the exclusion of people of color from serious criminal
and capital cases undermined the credibility and reliability of the criminal justice system?
Use specific examples from Just Mercy and one additional source to support your answer. Upon meeting Stevenson, Steve Bright makes the poignant assertion that “‘capital
punishment means ‘them without the capital get the punishment’” (6). Explore the theme
of class in Just Mercy. How does a person’s socioeconomic status affect one’s ability to
receive a fair trial? Use specific examples from Just Mercy and one additional source to
support your answer. Subject to my approval at the start of the writing process, explore another issue or theme
in Just Mercy, following the same approach as outlined in the two previous examples. To
have your focus approved, you will need to provide to me at least two specific examples from the book around which you can build your discussion. No more than two additional sources may be used. Feel free to use anything from
EJI.org and/or NPR.org. Any other sources used will need to be cleared through me
before peer review. Provide a comprehensive articulation of your main point in a clear thesis statement. Provide evidence for your thesis in support paragraphs that are developed and supported
with quotations from the text and second source. Remember that you are writing for a general audience. When you discuss the texts,
provide enough information about them that someone who has not read them can
understand what you are saying. Include full MLA documentation: in—text references and a Works Cited page for the text
and source(s) used in your essay. Essays must be 4-5 pages in length (not including the Works Cited).
