Charlie Chan During the 1920's, one sergeant in the Hawaiian police department became famous for the intuition and logical deduction he used to unravel criminal cases that baffled even the experts from Scotland Yard. Charlie Chan emigrated from China to Honolulu, where he was first employed as a servant in the house of a wealthy American. He joined the police force in 1902 and advanced to the rank of inspector in 1929. A Boston newspaper columnist, Earl Derr Biggers, popularized Chan by recording events from seven years of the inspector's career. Later, Chan was immortalized in the movies based on his adventures. Chan modestly attributed his extraordinary record to favourable circumstances rather than his own diligence. The chubby, middle- aged sleuth was philosophical in manner and maintained an air of polite humility, often quoting Chinese proverbs to explain his point of view. Chan was patient, persistent, and discreet when he worked on a case. He once said, "The fool in a hurry drinks his tea with a fork." He had an excellent memory and almost never used a notebook. Unlike some of his colleagues, Chan astutely followed every clue in an attempt to avoid making premature, erroneous judgments. After his chronicler died in 1933, the written account of the Chinese detective's work ended, so that little is known about Chan's later career accomplishments. As long as the Charlie Chan movies appear on television, however, the public will continue to admire the legendary detective.
