Margot Salas Professor Deaver ENG 1121 February 22, 2012 My Mothers Words Born as a Mexican-American brings different points of views on stages in life others have to over come because of the barrier of opportunity. My parents are one of the many immigrants who are limited to succeed because they are not legal citizens of the U.S; my parents came to America for a better life and a better future for their children. Not having a higher education and barely understanding English brought them to work hard to give us a better education to graduate and have a career, one they would never be able to reach growing up. The pressure of having to succeed overwhelmed me with confusion and gave me a lucid understanding of the purpose of succeeding. Many Mexican families underestimate their children’s abilities, therefore they decide to settle down and have a family in some cases. My life decisions led me to succeed, all by following a few meaningful words. My mother’s words. While growing up, my mother always adjusted the direction of my life, making every wrong decision right; Around December 2011 I was finally turning 18 and I kept insisting my mother to let me get a tattoo. My father and mother both had tattoos; it didn’t make sense to me why they wouldn’t let me get one. As little as I thought the subject was I finally understood why, because my mother had made the mistake of getting the tattoo in the first place and was warning me based on her experience and

regret about a simple tattoo. The words my mother told me restructured the way I thought the world was. Everyone is criticized based on their race or social standards. I always seeked to become better when it came to taking decisions whether it was based on my personal life or decisions that could drastically change my life. My mother and older sister were always my life tutors, with their advise I always had to follow the correct path and face problems on my own. Every successful step my sister took was a mandatory step I had to follow. In middle school we were both accepted to take a specialized high school program that would prepare us for the specialized high school exam. I was stuck two years attending classes every Wednesday after school and Saturdays at Stuyvesant high school. Everyday I thought of quitting and everyday my mom would repeat a speech of how proud she was of my dedication, but because my sister didn’t give up, I shouldn’t either because not many kids were fortunate enough to get accepted. I had to take advantage of the opportunity I was given. During that time I had started my first job at the New York Public Library two blocks down from my house. At work my daily routine would take place in a reading area you would be able to hear every small movement and breath a person would take. I was destined to quit any day but the words of my mom pushed me to last all summer break. Being at the age of 14 and affording certain items I didn’t exactly need because of work, money gave me a powerful feeling of change I had created. Around the last year of middle school, high school acceptance letters were coming in. Nervously hoping to get accepted to the same school as my sister, Millennium High School, I received my letter. As I skimmed through the letter I was breath less. I didn’t get accepted, I had to attend a high school three blocks away from my house. I
