When a person is overweight, and if his Body Mass Index (BMI) measure over thirty, the person is considered Obese. Childhood Obesity is in a rise in USA. It is a very complex and serious issue with no answer or solution. Face to that alarming epidemic, we are going to explore the different causes and effects and the steps to prevent Childhood Obesity in U.S. Childhood Obesity is an epidemic in the USA. The reasons that contribute that epidemic are multiples. One of the principal problems causing this epidemic is unhealthy eating habit encouraged by commercials for fast food restaurants, candy and soda. The media plays a major role, enticing people to eat a lot of foods that are very rich in carbohydrates. Together with the pressures families face in today’s dynamic and fast busy world, parents find that they have no time to cook healthy, food for their families. Children’s food choices are also influenced by family meals. There are parents that let their children make their own food decision, and sometimes that is not the smartest move. This plays a role in exacerbating this condition. The other main principal cause of childhood obesity is poor diet and poor nutrition. The carbohydrates group of foods contains organic compound that includes sugar, starches, celluloses and gum which provide energy to the body. Foods high in carbohydrate include fruits, sweets, soft drinks, breads, pasta, beans, potatoes, bran, rice, and cereals. Carbohydrates are a common source of energy in living organisms; however, no carbohydrate is an essential nutrient in human. Carbohydrates are not necessary building block of other molecules, and the body can obtain all its energy fro protein and fats. Children consume about 300 calories more than needed by
