Lift the Cell Phone Ban Cell phones become a defining feature of the youth culture nowadays. Everyone is becoming a part of the growing want and need of a cell phone especially that we are in the new digital age. In connection with this, the issue that concerns the banning of cell phone use during class becomes also controversial. Before, several educators have labeled cell phones as classroom disturbance. In fact, many schools across the country even banned the use of cell phones in school. However, it is still possible to think that there could be, in between the loud and demeaning ring tones and obsessive text messaging, some positive educational characteristics of these gadgets. According to “Lift the Cell Phone Ban” written by David Rapp, several schools in Asia and the United Kingdom have already turned cell phones into teaching tools. However, in United States, cell phones are still considered disturbance to learning, thus they are still banned in classrooms. According to Kolb, many teachers simply do not know the teaching potential cell phones have. The article shows that several districts in North America have done the same with using cell phones in class. They conducted an experiment to show the possibilities of cell phones as learning tools and not as a new mode of learning. The experiment demonstrates a good result. With this issue, I stand to agree on the advantages of cell phone use in classrooms. Instead of banning cell phones, we should consider its positive side. Schools should see cell phones as a learning tool rather than a disturbance. Cell phones should be used as teaching tools because one basis for an educational tool is to empower students to use tools they already know and own as a means for

better education. Cell phones are being loved by students, especially that cell phones nowadays offer a lot of features and services pertinent to users, specifically students. Such features and services include dictionaries, internet, camera, and video features. Today’s phones can alert students to study, serve as a smart vehicle to take notes, provide instant, on-demand answers and research, and even provide a great way to record and capture student oral reports or responses to polls and quizzes. Cell phones are indeed not villains of classroom anymore but as teaching and learning tools. Educators just have to know the exact approach in which they could get their students to use cell phones in a manner that might help them educationally, and not distract them. In the essay “Cell Phones as Teaching Tools”, William Ferriter also explores how cell phones could be used as teaching tools. According to him, cell phones can be a real disruption to learning when used improperly. Therefore, he tries to break down the negativities associated with using of cell phones in classroom by suggesting to make cell phones visible by putting on their desk, use cell phones to replace needed supplies, and convincing teachers and educators by one important application of cell phone to learning. He also stresses that embracing cell phones in school is a logical step. Even though the risks are real, the rewards of using it in learning are great.
