Ask yourself: 1. Is there any historical or background information that is relevant to my topic? 2. Are there any specific terms or jargon associated with the topic that the audience would need defined? 3. Do I need to explain to my audience why this issue is particularly relevant? 4. Are there any other items, facts, tidbits, etc. which my audience needs to know before I proceed with my thesis and argument? Any of the aforementioned points or combinations thereof would be suitable points for the body paragraphs of an exploratory essay. In fact, much, if not all, of your exploratory essay could conceivably be used in the “statement of the case” section of your research paper.
