The Statue of Liberty The statue of liberty can be seen as a one of the most important cultural artifacts of America. Apart from liberty the statue also means several other things that are central to the American culture. The statue was a gift from France top American on the eve of its centenary of independence. The statue was originally conceived as an emblem of friendship between US and France. It was a gift meant to reinforce the US and French friendship as well as their mutual desire for liberty. However, since the statue was erected it has come to mean a hundred different things. Particularly it used to represent a ray of hope and also stood as a reminder of the great American dream for millions who came to America through sea. The statue is also a sign of a universal value; that of freedom. By freedom it means freedom from every kind of oppression, poverty and all the other things that are against the spirit of humanity. It is the Mother of Exiles, greeting millions of immigrants and embodying hope and opportunity for those seeking a better life in America. It stirs the desire for freedom in people all over the world. It represents the United States itself” (NEH, 2016). Overtime circumstances have only worked to enhance its meaning and added to the meaning it used to convey. The statue is now linked to the image of America and in a way has improved with the growth and economic development of US. Internationally the statue is seen as a national emblem that also represents the cultural diversity and equity found in America. However, the statue also represents authenticity and integrity in itself. It is also sometimes seen as representing the human desire to rise high. The torch in the hand of the statue is seen as representing the light that America is in eyes of the

world. The statue of liberty was designated as a national monument in the year 1924. Basically there are two factors in which the symbolic values of the statue lies. First of all, it represents friendship. It was gift representing the friendly relations between US and France and second it also represented the cultural strength of America as well as its fight for liberty. Historically, the statue has come to be seen as a sign of the US culture and the American culture and the statue are seen as united. Portero notes, “The Statue of Liberty represented the travels and triumphs of the common man -- even its creation is evocative of that. Although the statue itself was designed and financed by the French as a gift to the United States a century after its independence, the pedestal had to be financed by the U.S.” (Portero, 2011). Seen through a cultural lens, the statue is a valuable artefact inseparable from American culture and identity. It is not just a tourist attraction but a symbol so intricately connected with the American identity that to many it symbolizes America. Honestly, the lady liberty holds a very special place in the heart of every American and every tourist that comes to see it links it with the US culture. William Sugiharto Statue of Liberty: Initial Research Integration One of the most important cultural artifacts in America is the statue of liberty. According to many, the cultural artifact that is situated in New York symbolizes freedom. Apart from that, different scholars have established other meanings that it holds like that of friendship. The statue was given to America by the France to commemorate 100 years of being a nation. It also brought two countries together which are the France and the U.S during the revolutionary war. It is true that the statue is one of a kind because no other country has such. The formation is also different and every part of it is meant to symbolize something (The Statue of Liberty 1). To start with, the crown on the statue is seen to have spikes just like those of the sun gods. The raising of her right foot is a symbol of being at constant move to bring freedom from other people. The enlightenment that is shown to be carried in the artifact like a burning torch symbolizes bringing light to the world. The sentiments of the symbols that the artifact carries have also been echoed by several writers like Portero in his article titled “What does the Statue of Liberty Stand for 125 years later.” The article titled ‘The Meaning and Use of a National Symbol’ also brings the same ideas to book. The two articles named above both agree to the fact that the national symbol is a valuable artifact to the culture and identity of America. Apart from being very old, the artifact is still protected and maintained by the government of America for many years because of the value it has to the people. Even after so many years after it was erected, the statue continues to serve the people with historical information that has to be passed from one generation to another. Historically, the artifact was a sign of peace between two sides and the entire nation of America.

William Sugiharto The value of peace to the people being presented at that time is seen not to change even in the present. The statue is there to represent peace and bring people together assuring them of freedom. Everyone passing through the site of the statue is hit by the significance of the symbol. It is true that the artifact is a symbol of friendship between two nations and representing good relations with neighbors. However, it is true that the two nations of France and America cannot keep the symbol a secret just to themselves ( Portero 1). It is also a good example to other nations in the country about the value of peace and togetherness of the people. Lessons learnt by the Americans regarding the statue are also learnt by other nations in reference to bringing people together and promoting freedom. Portero underlines it clearly in his article. According to the article, the freedom from oppression of any kind, freedom from poverty, and other inhuman acts is symbolized by the statue of liberty. Prothero also concurs to the idea that the statue is a unifying factor in the American society. In his article titled “Why the Liberals Win the Culture Wars even when they Lose Elections” America has many diverse groups thus making it culturally rich. It is true in all what the articles suggest that the artifact has played a major role in the establishment of peace in America. The unification of different groups has been made possible by the presence of things that people can relate to. Most of the arguments about prevalence of peace in America is because historical richness of the statue of liberty ( Prothero 25). All the articles do not dispute that. It is clear according to Prothero that freedom cannot be achieved without peace and unity. Peace and unity of the people are the two reasons that the statue of liberty still stands tall even after many years. The need to protect the artifact relates to the need to ensure that peace continues to prevail for infinity. The proposition to restore peace during the revolution war by the France was also
