ENWR 1102 2P 12 May 2016 Comparing and Contrasting Carla and Bethany The society that we live in today is full of dissatisfied and emotions of jealousy. Sometimes it is even worse than the one shown in the novel, Beauty, by Jane Martin. We fail to realize our own unique achievements and tend to envy others and their achievements. It is a common in our society to find the kind of dissatisfaction expressed by the two characters, Bethany and Carla. In the play … (write the background of the play). Unfortunately, jealous feelings which could bring destroyed effects on a person may be evoked by the fact that people are going to be dissatisfied with what they have. An analysis of the characters Carla and Bethany reveal that people in the society like to measure their achievements with that of the others instead of seeing their own happiness. There are more differences than similarities that are illustrated by Carla and Bethany. They depict feelings of jealous to each other’s achievements as they are both dissatisfied with their lives. Carla is lacks of brains and wisdom, but she is a beauty. Men pay her extreme attention due to her outstanding beauty to an extent that she is always on the phone talking, and she goes on many dates every other time. She has an obvious lack of intelligence to an extent that she cannot remember simple things like the number of the page she has reading (Martin 250). Contrastingly, Bethany is a brilliant and bright girl though she cannot match Carla when it comes to beauty. All of her accounting career, her publishing work, and her studies has been successful because of her intelligence. Carla and Bethany share similar characteristics despite they have differences. The position of both of them is not discounted. Bethany is not

happy with herself as she thinks she is not beautiful as Carla despite she has a successful career and other achievements. According to Bethany, a major aspect lacking in her life is beauty, and she says “Beauty is a real deal” (Martin 251). Unnecessary suffering in her life is brought about due to her appearance; she goes to an extent that she forgets her other achievements that are outstanding. Similarly, becoming successful and smart in her career like Bethany is what Carla dreams of. To add on, Carla and Bethany seem to have the same level of willpower. If only to fulfill their wishes, they are willing to explore the uncertainty of a ‘genie’. Regardless of the consequences, Bethany determined to achieve her goal of gaining beauty even though Carla tries to warn her that success is not necessarily brought about by beauty. The two characters Carla and Bethany only come to realize later when it is too late that what they wished for was less valuable than what they have lost. The main characters in the novel Carla and Bethany bring out the idea that the grass is always immature on the side. No one likes her status; they are so discontent to a level that jealousy sets in. The society today has this kind of discontent; this is seen in girls who hate the way they look to a point that they alter their appearances by bleaching or doing plastic surgery to look nice. The media influence has made many women become discontent with their bodies. Beauty is portrayed as ‘thin’ in the media today; the magazines use the ‘perfect’ models to show the world what beauty entails, and this heavily affects the society in a negative way. The society tries to copy the norm and goes to the extreme ends so as to become beautiful. Anything short of ‘thin’ is considered ugly (Walton par 4). Regardless of other good qualities and strengths like academic achievement, most women are not satisfied with their bodies. Leaving the media aside, people encounter their friends, strangers and the like in their
