Pearce 1 Garrett Pearce Mr. Peavy English 1301 10 October 2016 Pesky Personalities of Social Media Social media has become a part of everyday life. There are many avenues to choose from in the social media world including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Social media is a great way to share personal thoughts, photographs, and important life moments with friends and family. Keeping in touch by posting memorable photos and life milestones makes many people happy and keeps people feeling close even if they live miles apart. However, there are times when people will intentionally or unintentionally cause irritation and sadness through the use of social media. In order to maintain virtual happiness on social media, there are four types of pesky social media users to avoid. The Social Abuser The social abuser is the first type of pesky personality. They obsessively post on the internet about little things that they are doing and what is happening to them. The social abuser wants to share when they have brushed their teeth, what color socks they have on, and how they need to go to the grocery store. They will also message a person to the point of exhaustion and expect an immediate response. These attention seekers bombard the news feed constantly with unnecessary posts. To avoid becoming the next kind of negative social media user, the complainer, it would be best to unfriend the social abuser.

Pearce 2 The Complainer The complainers are negative people that are never happy. Since they cannot find happiness, they try to steal it from others. Complainers will post angry messages to get people riled up. They do not like anything, or anyone, and will use social media as a soap box to get a negative opinion out to the world. They wish for summer to come, then when it does, complain about the heat. The Fixer Then there is the fixer, a nitpicker that goes through everyone’s posts and comments looking for punctuation and spelling mistakes. The fixer enjoys correcting friends and family publicly. Fixers think that they are smarter than everybody and that people should think more highly of them because of their grammar correcting skills. This type of social media user can get very annoying and make you want to just stop posting all together. The Stalker At the opposite end of the scale is the silent stalker. They never say or do anything. The stalker is there, following every check-in, and examining every detail of people’s lives. Visiting others profiles daily just to see if they have any new updates. Stalkers never contribute by posting or liking anything, they just look. These social media users lurk in the virtual shadows of cyberspace. With all these annoying personalities on social media, it would be easy to not participate in the social sharing. Instead of refraining from social media, and missing out on many memorable experiences, avoid these pesky personalities. Unfriend them, block them, or delete them; do whatever needs to be done to maintain a positive, happy, virtual environment on social media.
