Question

How useful would Sources F and G be for a historian studying the causes

of World War I? In your answer, consider the perspectives provided by the two (2) sources, and the reliability of each. (10 marks)

The moral is obvious; it is that great armaments lead inevitably to war. If there are armaments on one side, there must be armaments on other sides. While one nation arms, other nations cannot tempt it to aggression by remaining defenceless...The enormous growth of armaments in Europe, the sense of insecurity and fear caused by them - it was these that made war inevitable.

Source F:  Extract from the memoirs of Sir Edward Grey, the British Foreign Secretary (1905-1916), published after the war in 1925 taken from Grey, V, 1925. Twenty Five Years, Longman, London.

Industrial nations like Great Britain or Germany had to find markets abroad, or face unending misery and disaster; it was equally important to have a steady supply of those raw materials which were not produced in Europe... However, much imperialism may be explained as the logical outcome of the industrial revolution; it contributed powerfully to the embitterment of international relations. In the first place, the spoils were not evenly divided, and those nations which received the least became discontented, ambitious and restless. Secondly, although the division was affected peacefully, there were many dangerous moments when war was narrowly avoided and many unpleasant incidents, which left behind them suspicion, hatred, and fear.

Source G: An extract from The Coming of War, by Bernadotte E Schmitt, published in 1966.
