question: Topic: Spread of Christianity in the 19th Century

That historical developments are interwoven with the history and mission of the church was never more evident than in the nineteenth century.

1. Briefly identify at least two major historical events, developments, and/or movements from nineteenth-century Europe.
2. Explain how each of these two events, developments, and/or movements affected the spread of the Gospel message on a global scale.
3. To what extent might we see similar opportunities or obstacles as a result of current events, developments, and/or movements today? Try to expand your thinking globally to include a other parts of the world in addition to your own community or your own country.

Thread: The first historical section I'd like to address is Christianity in India. We looked at William Carey and heard of him as one of the first pioneers in missionary work. He traveled to India to spread Christianity. He focused on specific aspects and goals that people in India could focus on and apply themselves to Christianity. He realized that Christianity needed to culturalize to the area it was apart of, and from there even thought it took many years Carey's work paid off and Christianity sparked and took flight. In India we now see a wide variety of religion spread all of the many cultures present. Christianity still holds a place in some areas that have modified Christianity to their culture.

African Apostles was the other source I took focus on for the historical section. When we look at Africa we see a bigger depth of Christianity. The reason we see this is in the 19th Century Africa was widely influenced by England and other countries but England was the primary factor. In England, Anglican people took flight spreading all over Africa. To put into perspective in 1900 we had 8-10 million Christians in Africa which amounted to 8-10 percent of the population. Now there are about 360 million Christians that account for 50 percent of the population in Africa (Christian History, Issue 79). England and other countries took over Africa without many people really understanding what was going on. Anglican view spread widely in Africa, but the main reason it was so successful in staying and spreading was due to the adaptation to the cultures present and combining the Christianity values into the cultures present all over Africa. We still see where the religion gets misused for wrong intentions. A great example was the issues dealing with Hotel Rwanda. They used Religion as a means of genocide and ruling over people. it became terrorists and reason for hatred holding no true religious values. Even though some resolution has been enforced we still see the side effects in Africa today.
