BIOL 3204 - Genetics

Final Exam

Spring 2016

I suggest you spend about 1 hour working on this exam.

THINK about each question for 10-15 minutes and jot down ideas.

Then take about 5 minutes for each question to WRITE your final answer.

Do not put your answers on this instruction page.

This exam is worth 20 points.

The exam is due by 4 P.M. on Friday May 6.

1. Imagine that you could get into a time machine and travel back to a monastery in Austria of 1866 and meet with Gregor Mendel, the "Father of Genetics". Make a list of 10 things that you would want to tell him about what we now know in 2016 about Genetics.

2. 25 years from now, you may have a daughter or son who enrolls in the Genetics class at MNU. Prof. Morrison, then 90 years old, will probably make a guest appearance or 2 to tell students what Genetics was like in the good old days, but he'll have been replaced by a younger, better-looking, extremely smart young woman who's a recent Harvard Ph.D. graduate. Make 2 general predictions and 2 specific predictions about how the content of MNU's Genetics course will differ from the course you took in 2016.

3. Imagine you're in a conversation with a very intelligent adult who for some reason has never learned anything about Genetics! Describe how you would explain to them (without any visual aids or even paper and pencil available) what a gene is and what it does. Also, fit DNA and chromosomes into your story.

4. Choose 1 topic in Genetics that has been of special interest to you. Write several good paragraphs in which you explain why the topic interests you.
