A Blue Alert is received on the "trauma paper" in the lab. The patient had been involved in an automobile
accident in which several people sustained serious injuries. The unconscious patient has so much damage to the body that is impossible to place an armband on him. The phlebotomists asks the trauma surgeon if the patient will require blood transfusions and if they should set up immediately. The surgeon responds "yes" As it is impossible to know what else will be needed the procedure is to draw "rainbow" and get out of the way as soon as possible. How should the phlebotomist identify the patient? How should the skin be disinfected prior to venipuncture? What paperwork is needed and how should've specified be transported to the laboratory?
