Step One: Interview anyone in Health Information Management profession and see what he/she thinks about the coding field. Obtain the answers to these questions:
1. What is your job in the medical field?
2. Does your job relate to coding? If so, in what way?
3. Can you describe the functions that a coder performs?
4. Do you know anything about the certification process for coders?
5. Do you feel it should be required for coders to be certified?
6. What do you think is the most important thing for me to learn while in school?
Step Two: Many organizations are requiring coders to become certified. Do some research on the internet and using the information provided in your textbook determine which certification you would like to obtain. You may want to look at the AAPC and AHIMA websites to gather some if this information. There are other organizations that provide certifications, but these are the two most recognized.
Step Three: Write a 2-4 page summary of your research findings and interview. Papers must be turned into turnitin.com. The results on your paper MUST be in the green or blue areas.
