COMPREHENSIVE STRESS MANAGEMENT PLAN I. SWOT Analysis SWOT Analysis is a powerful technique for understanding your Strengths and Weaknesses, and for looking at the Opportunities and Threats you face. How to use the tool: To carry out a SWOT Analysis, answer the following questions: Strengths: List your strengths. Write down: Personal strengths: What are your personal strengths? Skills? What do you do better than anyone else? What things are you good at that people respect your for? What are your areas of good experience? What do people who know you think are your strengths? What factors mean that you will be successful at things you attempt to accomplish? Support Network: What social network do you have /can you build? Resources: What resources can you draw on- money, assets, power, etc.? Next work through your strengths and look at the times where you managed stress well. Write down the practical skills you used to do this- these are likely to be your stress management strengths. Finally, look back into the past, and think about times when you handled intense stress successfully. Again, write down how you did this.

Weaknesses: List your personal weaknesses and limitations. Write down: Personal weaknesses: What areas are you aware of that you are not strong? What could you improve? What should you avoid? What are people who know you likely to see as your weaknesses? Lack of resources: What resources do you lack that people like you have access to? How does this absence of resources impact you and your situation? Bad situations: What bad experiences are you experiencing with relationships, school, or job? Are or have you had a poor living or working environment? Again, consider this from an internal and external basis: Do other people seem to perceive weaknesses that you do not see? Challenge these weaknesses rationally to ensure that they are fair and genuine and that you are being excessively harsh and self-critical. At the same time, challenge whether you could realistically expect more resources to be available. Then work through the stress diary again, looking at the times where you did not handle stress well. Identify where you have problems managing stress. Again, look into your past at stressful situations. Where you think you handled stress poorly, write down why you think this was the case. In doing so you are spotting where you need to develop new skills. Opportunities: List your opportunities. Write down: Where are the good opportunities facing you? What are the interesting trends you are aware of? First, work your way through the strengths you have identified. Ask yourself how you can draw on these strengths to help manage stress. Then work through the weaknesses you have identified. These are opportunities for positive change and for development of new skills. Finally, consider the real work, practical opportunities that would be open to you if you took advantage of these opportunities to improve your stress management.
