James H. Lane created the first Kansas colored infantry in 1862 to combat the confederacy in the south. The Kansas colored Infantry was an army that comprised of   600 African Americans. The Kansas Infantry joined the union in the fight for freedom for slaves in the south on the eve of the civil war. James H. Lane recruited African American men from the age of 18 to 45 years of age that were able bodied to fight. James H. Lane went to great heights to recruit men and even purchased slaves that were seized from Missouri and in return for joining his army he paid all of the recruits $10 a month, fed them and clothed them as well as giving them living quarters. Also black enlistees along with their families were given a certificate of freedom.
