Assignment #1: HR Advice
Purpose
For this assignment, you will act as an HR associate. Imagine you are begin consulted for advice on two
different issues. You will work with a partner to complete this assignment. Your group will be randomly
assigned to you and you can find out who you will be working with Via the Groups tool in the navigation
bar above. See the Assignment #1 groups.
Note: This is an Group Assignment to be done in groups of 3, that will be randomly assigned.

Respond to the two different situations described below. Read each situation carefully and collectively
answer the associated questions
Situation A
A hiring manager comes to you with a list of questions that she would like to use for her interview to
select a sales representative. Your task is to review the questions and identify which questions are
appropriate and/or inappropriate based on employment legislation.
Here are the questions the hiring manager would like to use:
1. Where were you born?
2. I have a young daughter, she just turned 1, she is so much fun! Do you have any of your own?
3. Will you submit proof of age by supplying birth certificate or baptismal record?
4. Why did you leave your last position?
5. What year did you graduate high school?

Your company is situated in an old two-level building in downtown Toronto. How would you respond to your company president in this situation? Provide your rationale based on
Canadian employment legislation and Supreme Court rulings to support your decision. Step 3

Situation A:
. 1 mark per question (including your rationale for your response) for a total of 10 marks
Situation B:
. 4 marks for your response to the company president (including your rationale for your response)
Style/Formatting:
. 3 marks for the clarity of your writing (i.e. is clear, concise, and free of errors in spelling/grammar)
3 marks for having a minimum of three citations for outside references that are credible and cited
appropriately throughout (If the words or ideas are not your own, then cite be sure to cite what
you have borrowed using APA citation guidelines).
