Read and analyze the case provided below. Answer the requirements that follows. 

1. "Motivating rank and file employees should be done by their immediate managers.

The role of HRM in motivating employees is limited to equipping line managers

with means of motivating their employees." Do you agree with this statement?

Why? 

2. All HR manager must make difficult decisions. One of the most difficult is choosing which employees to lay off in time of need. Assume that you are the human resource director of a 500-employee software company. You have been notified by top management that you must permanently reduce your staff by two individuals. Below are some data about your five employees. 


• Shane Allen, age 36. Shane has been with your company for five years in the HR department. She has been consistently rated as above average in her evaluations in the past three years. Shane has an MBA from Asian Institute of Management, a premier business school. She has recently given birth to her second child and as such she is on leave. She is expected to return in 20 weeks. 

• George Owen, age 49. George has been with you for four months and has 11 years of

experience in the company in systems management. He has a degree in computer

science and master's degrees in accounting information systems. He's also a

CPA. George's evaluations over the past three years in the systems department

have been average, but he did save the company P10,000,000 on a suggestion he

made to use electronic time sheets. 

• Charles Ruego, age 31. Charles has been with the company almost four years. His

evaluations over the past three years in your department have been outstanding.

He is committed to getting the job done and devotes whatever it takes. He has

also shown initiative by taking job assignments that no one else wanted.

Charles has been instrumental in starting up your benefits administration

intranet for employees. 

• Kate Wale, age 35. Kate has been with your company seven years. Four years ago, Kate

was in an automobile accident while traveling on business to a customer's

location. As a result of the accident, she was disabled and is wheelchair

bound. Rumor has it that she is about to receive several million pesos from the

insurance company of the driver who hit her. Her performance the past two years

has been above average. She has a bachelor's degree in human resource

management and a master's degree in human development. Kate specializes in

training, career, and organization development activities. 

• Reeves Samson, age 43. Reeves just completed his joint MBA and law program and

recently passed the bar exam. He has been with your department four years. His

evaluations have been good to above average. Five years ago, Reeves won a

lawsuit against your company for discriminating against him in a promotion to a

supervisory position. Rumor has it that now, with his new degree, Reeves is

actively pursuing another job outside the company. 


a. Given these five brief descriptions, make a recommendation to your boss in which

two employees will be laid off.

b. Discuss any other options you might suggest to meet the requirement of downsizing by two employees without resorting to layoffs.

c. Discuss what you will do to (1) assist the two individuals who have been let go and (2) assist the remaining three employees.
