BACKGROUND
WORLDDEV: Action Learning Program Learning Transfer Case Study This case is for illustrative purposes, to demonstrate the effective facilitation of learning transfer. Background In 2010, WorldDev enjoyed a 24 percent sales growth, with sales totaling over $25 billion. Employee growth was almost 9 percent, with 40,000 employees that year. During this time, the Asia/Pacific leadership team found that their business was growing, but there were not enough qualified people to staff that growth. Broadly speaking, the region was short on staff with a strong business background and, in some areas, with free-market experience. Specific gaps were found in areas such as operating in teams, big-picture thinking regarding how operations fit with overall strategy, cross-cultural competencies, and speaking out.


STRATEGIC PLAN
To address these gaps, WorldDev created an integrated learning program that fit the definition of true action learning: an educational intervention consciously applied to real world situations and problems, with measurable impact. A two-week educational curriculum was created with specified follow-up application assignments over one year. Participants came from 14 different countries and multiple functions. The target audience is composed of employees who have approximately four years of experience with WorldDev, are solid contributors, have expanded their job roles, and are judged to have the potential to succeed at higher levels in the organization.


Each of the action learning assignments was designed to put into practice the skills learned in the coursework. The twelve assignments were specified for completion at months one, three, six or twelve. Examples of these assignments include:
• Month One - Use the MentorMatch tool on the intranet to identify one's own mentoring needs and obtain a mentor.
• Month Three - Develop one idea to improve the company, make a business case, and present to the supervisor's supervisor.
• Month Six - Develop a plan to improve the business results of the company, analyze how the plan will impact the work process, present the proposal, monitor implementation, and keep track of results.
• Month Twelve - Develop, coach, or mentor others in the organization.


RESULTS
The first class was held in March 2011, the second in June, and the third in December. For the first class, the average contribution to the bottom line from the Month Six assignments was US $37,000. Ratings of the program and its value to WorldDev were also extremely positive. WorldDev is planning to introduce the program in other regions, tailored to specific regional needs.
