- a concept that examines the moral rights and wrongs of a certain situation. Consider the fact that many HR managers negotiate salary and union contracts and manage conflict. Ethics (specifically the ability to maintain confidentiality) is the most important aspect of being great HR professional.

- This is the method by which job performance is measured and be considered beneficial by motivating and rewarding employees.

There are other names performance appraisals may go by: employee appraisal, performance review, 360 review, career development review.

Diversity - this is defined as the differences between people which include race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, background, socioeconomic status, and more. Diversity is important to the success of organizations.

Discrimination - discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, and disability. Discrimination on the basis of sex is illegal and covered by the EEOC.

Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) - this is a federal agency is charged with the task of enforcing federal employment discrimination laws; laws include those that protect people from discrimination in all areas of employment such as discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, and disability.

Human Resource planning - is a process that is part of the strategic plan. It involves addressing specific needs within the organization, based on the company's strategic direction. It is a process of anticipating and making provision for the movement (flow) of people into, within, and out of an organization. The process of deciding what propositions the firm will have to fill, and how to fill them.

HRM strategic plans - This is considered the major objectives the organization wants to achieve and is considered a long term goal for the organization. The strategic plan looks at the organization/at the department as a whole.

Compensation - in addition to paychecks, 401(k) plans, health benefits, and other perks are usually the responsibility of an HR manager; includes anything the employee receives from his or her work
