An article in Industrial and Engineering Chemistry ("More on Planning Experiments to Increase Research Efficiency", 1970, pp. 60-65) uses a 25-2 design to investigate the effect of A = condensation temperature, B = amount of material 1, C = solvent volume, D = condensation time, and E = amount of material 2 on the response yield. The results obtained are as follows:

a.    Verify that the design generators used were I = ACE and I = BDE. Also, explain why the generators identified below in the Minitab Guidance are correct.

b.    Write down the complete defining relation and the aliases for this design.

c.    By hand calculation, estimate the main effects.

d.    Using Minitab, show the normal probability plot of the effects. Which effects seem active? (See the Minitab instructions below).

e.    Using Minitab, collapse the design and prepare an ANOVA table. Verify that the AB and AD interactions are available to use as error.

f.     Write down a regression model for predicting the response based on the results of this experiment, collapsing the design as appropriate.

g.    Analyze the residuals from this experiment. Is there any indication of model inadequacy?

h.    Create cube plots, interaction plots, residuals plots, and any other graphics which support your analysis.
