] solution is blue and another is green, which would be expected to have the higher value of Δ?

8. Chromium(II) fluoride and manganese(II) fluoride both have a central metal ion surrounded by 6 fluoride

           ligands. The Mn-F bond lengths are equidistant, but four of the Cr-F distances are longer than the

other two Cr-F bonds. Explain this observation.


9. Solid CrF3 contains a Cr(III) ion surrounded by six F- ions in an octahedral geometry, all at distances of 190pm. 

           However, MnF3 has a distorted geometry with Mn-F distances of 179, 191, and 209pm (two of each). 

           Suggest an explanation.


10. When visible light passes through a solution of nickel(II) sulfate, a green solution results. What is the

   HOMO/LUMO transition responsible for this color? Would you expect a Jahn-Teller distortion for this complex?
