TYPES OF CHEMICAL REACTIONSBACKGROUND: HYPOTHESIS:

Summarize what you know about the four types of chemical reactions.  For each give the clues you would use to recognize which type of chemical reaction is occurring.

For each part of the procedure, predict what type of reaction you think will occur and give reasons for your prediction.  Then write out the word equation for the reaction.  (6 marks will be allotted for these hypotheses)


PROCEDURE:

A.  Place a clean iron nail in a test tube and cover it with a solution of copper(II) sulfate.  Set this test tube aside while you carry out the rest of the lab.  At the end of the lab period, pour off the liquid in the test tube and dump the nail onto a paper towel to examine it.


                                    B.  Place a small amount of copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate crystals (compare with the sample on display to judge the amount) in a clean, dry test tube.  Use a test tube holder to position the test tube over a gentle burner flame.  Heat it for 10 - 20 s (or less if a noticeable change occurs quickly).  After this step is done, fill the cooled test tube with water and let it soak to make clean up easier.


                                    C.  Place a small amount of sodium sulfate solution in a test tube.  Add a medicine dropper full of barium chloride solution.  Allow the mixture in the test tube to settle for a few minutes before making final observations.


                                    D.  Polish a piece of copper wire with steel wool if it is not lustrous.  Using crucible tongs, heat the wire to red heat for 30 s in a burner flame.  Stop immediately if it starts to melt.  Remove the wire and examine it.  After the wire has cooled, scrape its surface with the edge of a scoopula.


                                    E.  Place a small piece of mossy zinc in a test tube.  Add enough hydrochloric acid to cover the zinc.  Wipe the tub mouth with paper towel to remove any acid.  Place your thumb over the tube top prevent gas from escaping. After a minute or two (sooner if you feel pressure building) remove your thumb and quickly hold a burning splint at the mouth of the test tube.


                                    F.  Place a small amount of hydrogen peroxide in a test tube.  Use a toothpick to add an amount of manganese(IV) oxide the size of a match head.  Then plunge a glowing splint into the test tube.  Observe the glowing embers WHILE they are plunging (less than half a second so pay attention.)  Manganese(IV) oxide is a catalyst in this experiment.
