1) Mr. Fish decided to have a friendly board game competition with his family. They played five of their favorite games and recorded the results of each game. Then, a set number of points were awarded for each 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place finish. The following table indicates the results:

Mrs. Fish ended up on top with 29 total points. Right behind was Boy Fish with 27 points. Mr. Fish got a total of 23 points and Girl Fish finished with 11 points.

a. Set up a system of equations using the variables w, x, y and z to represent each of the unknown point values. Include the system here:

b) Use your calculator to solve the system and determine how many points each place was worth. Include the final matrix that your calculator provides after using the "rref" capability. Provide your final answer with complete sentences and appropriate units.

  • For the first answer, I used the equations 2w+2y+z=23 for Mr. Fish, w+3x+y=29 for Mrs. Fish, 2w+x+y+z=27 for Boy Fish, and x+y+3z=11 for Girl Fish. For whatever reason, the website was having trouble uploading that attachment. I then put all the coefficients into a 4x5 matrix labeled [A] in my calculator, using the coefficient of 0 for variables that weren't in the equations. Hope this helps!
