Case study prepared by: David Lane Overview Naming the ink color of color words can be diFcult. ±or example, if asked to name the color of the word "blue" is diFcult because the answer (red) con²icts with the word "blue." This interference is called "Stroop Interference" a³er the researcher who ´rst discovered the phenomenon. This case study is a classroom demonstraµon. Students in an introductory staµsµcs class were each given three tasks. In the "words" task, students read the names of 60 color words wri¶en in black ink; in the "color" task, students named the colors of 60 rectangles; in the "interference" task, students named the ink color of 60 con²icµng color words. The µmes to read the sµmuli were recorded. There were 31 female and 16 male students. QuesTons to Answer Is naming con²icµng color names faster or slower than naming color rectangles? Which is faster, naming color rectangles or reading color names? Are there gender di·erences? Design Issues This was not a well-controlled experiment since it was just a classroom demonstraµon. The order in which the students performed the tasks may not have been counterbalanced or randomized. overview of the following based on the research quesTons, “Do males and females diFer in the Tme it takes to correctly conduct the stroop tasks? Are there diFerences in the Tme it takes to correctly conduct the various stroop tasks – words, colors, or interference? ±inally, does the eFect of the stroop task type depend on the gender?” Hypotheses: List the staTsTcal notaTon and wri²en explanaTons for the null and alternaTve hypotheses for the study. Variables: Describe the independent and dependent variables, their levels, operaTonal de³niTons, and characterisTcs (e.g., scale of measurement). OperaTonal de³niTon for the variables Data Analysis: You are given the informaTon below from the ANOVA conducted. Summarize the speci³c type of staTsTcal test conducted, the results obtained, and conclusions regarding the hypotheses (e.g, can we reject at the .05 or .01 level?). Be sure to describe why this speci³c ANOVA was selected and if a post-hoc test should be conducted.
