Epicyclic Gearbox Design - 2010 Veiko Nangolo - 209000600 Synopsis A design of a two speed reduction epicyclic gearbox suitable for the Baja car was proposed. The new design seeks to improve the gearing ratio of the gearbox resulting in better performance in the hill climbing and pulling events during the annual SASOL MINI BAJA competition. The design is to be an improvement on the single speed double reduction gearbox used in car number eight of 2009. A planetary gearbox is also desired due to its compactness which will result in saving on overall car weight. The system of different devices that transmit torque and power from the engine to the drive wheels of cars is commonly referred to as the drive train or transmission. This includes the engine, clutch, gearbox, propeller shaft (if needed), differential, drive shaft and the wheels. This design is concerned with the design of the gearbox and the other devices are only referred to, to show and illustrate their interaction with the gearbox. i
